JetBlue A320 from JFK declares emergency

A scheduled JetBlue flight from New York (JFK) to Santiago, Chile has declared the general emergency and is presently on diversion.

JetBlue flight B6137, operated by an Airbus A320-200 registered N534JB declared a general emergency, squawking 7700 as it passed abeam Ocean City, Maryland en route to Santiago (STI).

The aircraft now appears to be making good a diversion to return to New York.

The flight was on climb through 32,000 feet before initiating a descent to just below 10,000 feet, and is currently initiating a direct return to New York.

Descent to 10,000 feet can sometimes be indicative of a pressurization problem, though it should be stressed that the nature of the emergency is not known at this stage.

JetBlue flight B6137 is operated by an Airbus A320-200, registration N534JB; a 21 year old aircraft. The flight is now in the New York Oceanic Flight Information Region (FIR), on descent through 3,000 feet on approach to JFK.

Weather is VFR for the flight’s arrival. The nature of the emergency remains unconfirmed.
